Blue glass mosaic waterline tile and light stone coping along the edge of a swimming pool

The edge of the pool is where most of the visible wear shows. Waterline tile collects scale, tile cracks or pops loose, and coping, the stone or concrete cap around the edge, shifts and gets rough. These are not just cosmetic problems. A loose coping stone is a hazard for bare feet and can let water get behind the shell.

Waterline tile

The band of tile at the waterline protects the shell and makes the pool easy to clean. Ceramic, porcelain and glass tile are all used. Glass looks bright but can be more demanding to install, and its price runs higher than most ceramic.

Scale. White crusty deposits at the waterline are usually calcium. In many parts of Florida, water is hard, and scale builds up as water evaporates at the line. Light scale can be cleaned off with the right products or by bead blasting, which uses fine media to clean the tile surface. Heavy scale may mean the tile needs replacing.

Cracked or loose tile. Tiles can crack from movement, from heat cycles, or from poor bonding. A few loose tiles can be reset, but a lot of them can mean the bond has failed along a stretch. A contractor can show you where the tile is hollow.

Coping

Coping sits on top of the bond beam, the concrete collar at the top of the pool wall. Concrete, travertine, pavers and other stone are common. Over the years, coping can loosen, crack or stain, and the mortar underneath can fail. Damage can also come from a deck that has shifted.

  • Loose or rocking stones should be fixed soon, since they can shift further and cause an injury
  • Gaps or cracks in the mortar line can let water in behind the coping
  • Rust stains can come from steel in the bond beam, a sign that the beam deserves a look
  • Sharp or chipped edges are a safety issue

Doing it with a resurface

Tile and coping are often done at the same time as resurfacing. The pool is drained anyway, new tile at the waterline has a clean surface to attach to and the new finish can be matched against the new tile line. If you are planning both, ask for one quote that covers both, and check that the plan has the tile being done first.

Licensing and permits

Pool work in Florida must be done by a licensed pool and spa contractor, and you can check any license for free on MyFloridaLicense.com. Permits depend on the job, the city or the county, and your HOA may have a say. More detail is on the pool resurfacing page.

What it costs

Price is driven by the feet of tile or coping, the material you choose and whether there is damage underneath. A repair of a few tiles can be a small job. A full new waterline of glass tile, or new stone coping around a large pool, can cost much more. Tile is usually priced by the linear foot of pool edge.

See pool resurfacing for the surface itself, and pool deck resurfacing for the area around the coping.
